Using Millimeter VLBI to Constrain RIAF Models of Sagittarius A*

    Get PDF
The recent detection of Sagittarius A* at lambda = 1.3 mm on a baseline from Hawaii to Arizona demonstrates that millimeter wavelength very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) can now spatially resolve emission from the innermost accretion flow of the Galactic center region. Here, we investigate the ability of future millimeter VLBI arrays to constrain the spin and inclination of the putative black hole and the orientation of the accretion disk major axis within the context of radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) models. We examine the range of baseline visibility and closure amplitudes predicted by RIAF models to identify critical telescopes for determining the spin, inclination, and disk orientation of the Sgr A* black hole and accretion disk system. We find that baseline lengths near 3 gigalambda have the greatest power to distinguish amongst RIAF model parameters, and that it will be important to include new telescopes that will form north-south baselines with a range of lengths. If a RIAF model describes the emission from Sgr A*, it is likely that the orientation of the accretion disk can be determined with the addition of a Chilean telescope to the array. Some likely disk orientations predict detectable fluxes on baselines between the continental United States and even a single 10-12 m dish in Chile. The extra information provided from closure amplitudes by a four-antenna array enhances the ability of VLBI to discriminate amongst model parameters.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

On formalising and analysing the tweetchain protocol

Distributed Ledger Technology is demonstrating its capability to provide flexible frameworks for information assurance capable of resisting to byzantine failures and multiple target attacks. The availability of development frameworks allows the definition of many applications using such a technology. On the contrary, the verification of such applications are far from being easy since testing is not enough to guarantee the absence of security problems. The paper describes an experience in the modelling and security analysis of one of these applications by means of formal methods: in particular, we consider the Tweetchain protocol as a case study and we use the Tamarin Prover tool, which supports the modelling of a protocol as a multiset rewriting system and its analysis with respect to temporal first-order properties. With the aim of making the modeling and verification process reproducible and independent of the specific protocol, we present a general structure of the Tamarin Prover model and of the properties to verified. Finally, we discuss the strengths and limitations of the Tamarin Prover approach considering three aspects: modelling, analysis and the verification process. Copyrigh

Estimating the Parameters of Sgr A*'s Accretion Flow Via Millimeter VLBI

Recent millimeter-VLBI observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) have, for the first time, directly probed distances comparable to the horizon scale of a black hole. This provides unprecedented access to the environment immediately around the horizon of an accreting black hole. We leverage both existing spectral and polarization measurements and our present understanding of accretion theory to produce a suite of generic radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) models of Sgr A*, which we then fit to these recent millimeter-VLBI observations. We find that if the accretion flow onto Sgr A* is well described by a RIAF model, the orientation and magnitude of the black hole's spin is constrained to a two-dimensional surface in the spin, inclination, position angle parameter space. For each of these we find the likeliest values and their 1-sigma & 2-sigma errors to be a=0(+0.4+0.7), inclination=50(+10+30)(-10-10) degrees, and position angle=-20(+31+107)(-16-29) degrees, when the resulting probability distribution is marginalized over the others. The most probable combination is a=0(+0.2+0.4), inclination=90(-40-50) degrees and position angle=-14(+7+11)(-7-11) degrees, though the uncertainties on these are very strongly correlated, and high probability configurations exist for a variety of inclination angles above 30 degrees and spins below 0.99. Nevertheless, this demonstrates the ability millimeter-VLBI observations, even with only a few stations, to significantly constrain the properties of Sgr A*.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Ap

Testing the Isotropy of the Universe with Type Ia Supernovae

We analyze the magnitude-redshift data of type Ia supernovae included in the Union and Union2 compilations in the framework of an anisotropic Bianchi type I cosmological model and in the presence of a dark energy fluid with anisotropic equation of state. We find that the amount of deviation from isotropy of the equation of state of dark energy, the skewness \delta, and the present level of anisotropy of the large-scale geometry of the Universe, the actual shear \Sigma_0, are constrained in the ranges -0.16 < \delta < 0.12 and -0.012 < \Sigma_0 < 0.012 (1\sigma C.L.) by Union2 data. Supernova data are then compatible with a standard isotropic universe (\delta = \Sigma_0 = 0), but a large level of anisotropy, both in the geometry of the Universe and in the equation of state of dark energy, is allowed.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Union2 analysis added. New references added. To appear in Phys. Rev.

Intralabyrinthine Vestibular Schwannoma Responsive to Intratympanic Gentamicin Treatment

Intralabyrinthine schwannoma (ILS) is a rare benign tumor that affects the ends of cochlear and vestibular nerves. In a majority of the cases, it occurs with unilateral progressive sensorineural hearing loss. Less frequent symptoms include tinnitus, imbalance, vertigo, or fullness. The advent of magnetic resonance imaging allows early diagnosis and enables an appropriate therapeutic protocol. This report describes a case of intravestibular schwannoma, with fluctuating hearing loss and intractable vertigo, treated with intratympanic gentamicin. The patient was a 28-year-old woman with intractable vertigo and fluctuating left-side hearing loss caused by left intravestibular schwannoma. Because surgery was temporarily rejected by the patient, a single dose of intratympanic gentamicin was administered. Following this, the patient showed a significant improvement in the symptoms. However, moderate to flat sensorineural hearing loss was also observed. Intratympanic gentamicin infiltration is a valid therapeutic option for patients with ILS, affected by intractable vertigo, when the patient refuses surgery

Death related to a congenital vascular anomaly of pulmonary hamartoma type: Malpractice or tragic fatality?

In forensic pathology, apparently straightforward cases can often hide rarities that, if not correctly interpreted, can alter the results of the entire investigation, leading to misinterpretations. This occurs when the investigation is conducted to assess medical malpractice. An unexpected death, with no known apparent cause, is often linked to an underlying disease process of unclear etiological origin whose nature can, unfortunately, be properly investigated only post-mortem. This presentation shows a case study, in which it was possible to reconduct the death of a patient to a natural pathology and not to medical treatment. Here, the authors illustrate a case with a hamartoma developed in chronic inflammatory conditions (bronchiectasis) that was difficult to differentiate from lung cancer due to the inability to perform specific instrumental examinations. The hamartoma, usually benign and identifiable by standard instrumental investigations, in this case, led to the patient’s death precisely during the execution of a bronchoscopy. However, in the absence of a certain cause of death, public opinion unanimously attributes a patient’s disease to medical error. Indeed, a routine practice such as bronchoscopy should not cause death and consequently, the doctor must have made a mistake. Fortunately, the autopsy not only demonstrated the origin of the bleeding but also unveiled the reason for this, as rare congenital lung disease. Fate, one might say

Exploring the impact of data poisoning attacks on machine learning model reliability

Recent years have seen the widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence techniques in several domains, including healthcare, justice, assisted driving and Natural Language Processing (NLP) based applications (e.g., the Fake News detection). Those mentioned are just a few examples of some domains that are particularly critical and sensitive to the reliability of the adopted machine learning systems. Therefore, several Artificial Intelligence approaches were adopted as support to realize easy and reliable solutions aimed at improving the early diagnosis, personalized treatment, remote patient monitoring and better decision-making with a consequent reduction of healthcare costs. Recent studies have shown that these techniques are venerable to attacks by adversaries at phases of artificial intelligence. Poisoned data set are the most common attack to the reliability of Artificial Intelligence approaches. Noise, for example, can have a significant impact on the overall performance of a machine learning model. This study discusses the strength of impact of noise on classification algorithms. In detail, the reliability of several machine learning techniques to distinguish correctly pathological and healthy voices by analysing poisoning data was evaluated. Voice samples selected by available database, widely used in research sector, the Saarbruecken Voice Database, were processed and analysed to evaluate the resilience and classification accuracy of these techniques. All analyses are evaluated in terms of accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, F1-score and ROC area

Cyber resilience meta-modelling: The railway communication case study

Recent times have demonstrated how much the modern critical infrastructures (e.g., energy, essential services, people and goods transportation) depend from the global communication networks. However, in the current Cyber-Physical World convergence, sophisticated attacks to the cyber layer can provoke severe damages to both physical structures and the operations of infrastructure affecting not only its functionality and safety, but also triggering cascade effects in other systems because of the tight interdependence of the systems that characterises the modern society. Hence, critical infrastructure must integrate the current cyber-security approach based on risk avoidance with a broader perspective provided by the emerging cyber-resilience paradigm. Cyber resilience is aimed as a way absorb the consequences of these attacks and to recover the functionality quickly and safely through adaptation. Several high-level frameworks and conceptualisations have been proposed but a formal definition capable of translating cyber resilience into an operational tool for decision makers considering all aspects of such a multifaceted concept is still missing. To this end, the present paper aims at providing an operational formalisation for cyber resilience starting from the Cyber Resilience Ontology presented in a previous work using model-driven principles. A domain model is defined to cope with the different aspects and “resilience-assurance” processes that it can be valid in various application domains. In this respect, an application case based on critical transportation communications systems, namely the railway communication system, is provided to prove the feasibility of the proposed approach and to identify future improvements
